While the PS2 wasn’t renowned for its robust online infrastructure, SOCOM managed to amass a mammoth fanbase and establish itself as the cream of the crop. In fact it’s been so popular, that the server for the original game has been going strong since 2002, along with its last-gen successors.
So it’s sad to hear that on August 31st, eight SOCOM games will see their doors closed forever, including the four PS2 and four PSP games. That means both the PS3′s SOCOM Confrontation and SOCOM 4 are safe for the time being, with just the old boys getting the chop. Included are:
PlayStation 2
- SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs
- SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs
- SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs
- SOCOM Combined Assault
PlayStation Portable
- SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo
- SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 2
- SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3
- SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike
With the newer titles failing to stand alongside their predecessors it’ll be sad to see them go. And it’s not like we’ll see another game in the series anytime soon either, with developer Zipper Interactive being closed down shortly after its Vita debut with Unit 13. Still, if you still have your PS2 or PSP hooked up online there’s still a chance to hop on for a few farewell games.
