If you haven’t read my previous entries then you can read the intro here, day 1 here, and day 2 here.
Today I prepared myself. I looked at a guide and decided to see where I was going wrong. I kind of don’t want to admit it to anyone, but I was just incredibly stupid and was reading the wrong quest. I was in completely the wrong area. Shakira had taken me to the portal for the new battleground, instead of to the docks where you get the boat to the new zone, so really it’s all Shakira’s fault…
Anyway I boarded the boat and watched some rather nice cinematics till I finally arrived. I’m not sure what I was expecting to be honest, because I avoided all things Cataclysm for ages, so I don’t have a clue what any of the story line is, but I wasn’t really expecting a broken boat and having to quest under water for a lot of it. I mean it’s a nice enough area, and the quests so far are simple enough (they might be a bit too simple, they remind me of level 1 starting areas), but why does it have to be underwater?! I am playing on a macbook at the minute, trying to swim whilst playing on a laptop is never easy at the best of times, but a laptop that doesn’t have a right click button makes it even harder. At least as a Warlock I can cast Unending Breath on myself. Hell yes!
I am quite enjoying the quests, and finally getting used to my spells again, but according to my spell book I have new ones I can learn. Alas I can’t find a class trainer anywhere, which is just as well really because I don’t need anything else added to confuse me more so I will just put up with my awful DPS (Damage Per-Second). Of course! That’s when it clicks, I want my DPS meter back! For those of you who don’t play WoW there are lots of add-ons you can get for in the game, such as quest helpers, DPS meters, I think there is even a naked bug one! Anyway a DPS meter is essential in my book, it tells me how good or bad I am doing, and when I am doing well is when I start getting competitive.
I spend yet another half hour trying to figure out how to install this damn add on, I swear things are a million times easier on PC. After giving up I ask a guild member whats the easiest way on mac and they say to use Curse Client. Cue another durr Kelsey moment from me. You download Curse Client, then download all the add-ons you want and it installs them automatically for you; in about 2 minutes, rather than 30.
With my new DPS meter installed, I decide to see how bad my DPS really is by joining a random group for some dungeons. I was right, and my DPS was the worst. After explaining to the group how I haven’t played the game since Wrath of the Lich King so can they please explain any boss tactics. They seem to be forgiving, I think they are even a bit happy to have someone to teach. It’s great, I make a couple of mistakes but they are fine because I have been honest and apologised. The rogue on the other hand who ninja’d a cloth item got kicked straight away!
I joined a second random dungeon, and guess what? My damage wasn’t the worst! I can see that my DPS is improving, and I am really getting the hang of playing again. All I need to do now is get myself some decent gear and I reckon I’ll be top of the tables in no time.
Had a great night tonight, although I’m still not 81 yet, I blame it on not being able to swim properly!
